Origin and history
Saint-Pierre-ès-Liens de Montcaret Church is a Catholic church in the Dordogne department, New Aquitaine. It was erected in the 11th and 12th centuries on the site of a Gallo-Roman villa, whose architectural elements, such as marble capitals, were reused in its construction. These ancient remains are visible under the arches of the apse and in carved decorations, especially on the triumphal arch.
Ranked a historic monument on 18 March 1913, the church is distinguished by its capitals adorned with biblical scenes and bas-reliefs integrated into the bell tower, representing Adam and Eve, as well as Saint-Pierre and Saint-Paul. These artistic elements testify to the transition between Antiquity and the Middle Ages, while illustrating the religious and cultural importance of the site.
The building, owned by the municipality of Montcaret, is a remarkable example of Romanesque architecture in Périgord. Its location, on an ancient Roman occupation, underscores the historical continuity of the place, where there are mixed ancient heritage and medieval Christian tradition. The precise location, 7 Rue de la Villa Gallo-Romane, confirms this link with the Gallo-Roman past of the region.
