Origin and history

The Saint-Pierre-ès-Liens church of Sainte-Alvère stands on the foundations of an ancient Romanesque church of the 12th century. Its construction, launched on 18 May 1775 by the laying of the first stone, was completed in 1783 with its consecration. This 4th quarter of the 18th century project marks an architectural transition between medieval traditions and the classical influences of the modern era.

In the 19th and 20th centuries, the building underwent several major restoration campaigns. In 1878, significant work was undertaken to preserve its structure. A second wave of restorations took place in 1933, while the bell tower, damaged between the two world wars, was rebuilt in 1953 with a reinforced concrete frame, illustrating the adaptation of modern techniques to historical monuments.

Ranked among the Historical Monuments by decree of 17 October 1995, the church now belongs to the commune. Its location, in the heart of Sainte-Alvère (integrated since Val de Louyre and Caudeau), makes it a witness to the religious and social history of the Dordogne, between medieval heritage and contemporary transformations.
