Origin and history
The church Saint-Pierre-ès-Liens de Sarran, located in the Corrèze department in New Aquitaine, was built in the early 15th century. An inscription on the vault key of the first span, Anno Domini MCCCIX (1409), attests to the date of foundation of the initial chapel, now the parish church. This first building, composed of a single nave with three spans and a flat-side choir, was enlarged by the addition of two side chapels forming a small transept. The arches at the cross-dogives and the "Limousin" portal, with ground windows, characterize its regional Gothic style.
At the end of the 19th century, the church underwent a major transformation with the construction of an octagonal bell tower with a conical roof, replaced in 1931 by the present bell tower-wall because of its degraded state. The interior houses several protected furniture elements, including a bell, statues (such as that of Saint John the Baptist), and half-reliefs representing the wedding of Cana and the Supper. A Pietà and a winged tabernacle complete this artistic ensemble, testifying to the rich heritage of the place.
Listed in the Historical Monuments by decree of 31 May 1988, the church illustrates the architectural and religious evolution of a Correzian rural building, marked by successive additions and an adaptation to liturgical needs. Its bell tower-pinion, pierced by two arches, and its north-west facade, adorned with a typical Limousin gate, make it an example of the local heritage. The property of the commune remains a place of worship and a testimony of the medieval and modern history of Sarran.
Available sources, including Wikipedia and Monumentum, highlight its importance in the religious and architectural landscape of the region. The accuracy of its location, noted 8/10, and the photographs licensed under Creative Commons (Cyrille Largillier) document its current state, while the Merimée base lists its exact address: 1 Route du Musée, 19800 Sarran.
