Origin and history
The church of Saint-Pierre-et-Saint-Michel, located in Saint-Urcize in the department of Cantal, is a religious building whose origins date back to at least the twelfth century. It was given in 1074 by Robert de Saint-Urcize and his brother Bertrand to the monastery of Saint-Victor in Marseilles, before being assigned around 1167 to the abbey of the Chaise-Dieu, which founded the priory of Saint-Pierre. This monument, marked by architectural additions in the 14th and 15th centuries, illustrates the evolution of medieval religious styles in the region.
The northern chapel, dedicated to Saint Michael, served as a burial place for the family of Canillac, stressing its local importance. The choir, dating from the 12th century, features a walkway illuminated by narrow windows and radiant chapels, while the nave, from the 14th century, supports a four-bayed arcade bell tower. Ranked a historic monument in 1921, the church embodies the religious and architectural heritage of the medieval Auvergne.
The building, owned by the commune of Saint-Urcize, is listed in the bases Mérimée and Clochers de France. His plan combines elements Romanesque (chœur) and Gothic (nef), reflecting the stylistic transitions of the period. The accuracy of its location is considered satisfactory, and photographs licensed under Creative Commons document its current state.
