Origin and history
The church Saint-Pierre-et-Saint-Paul de Baigneaux, located in the Gironde department in New Aquitaine, finds its origins in the 11th century, where a first religious building is attested. The present nave, of Gothic style, dates from the 2nd quarter of the 16th century (1538), as evidenced by an inscription on a key vault. This medieval vestige is the historical heart of the monument, marked by a characteristic architecture of the late Renaissance in Aquitaine.
In the mid-19th century, the church underwent a radical transformation in the neo-Gothic style, including a reversal of its liturgical orientation: the choir was moved to the west, a rare practice motivated by urban or symbolic imperatives. This renovation was accompanied by the construction of a new bell tower and eastern and western endings, dated 1854. These works reflect the religious architectural renewal of the century, marked by a return to idealized medieval forms.
The building, inscribed entirely in historical monuments by decree of 10 June 2002, illustrates two key periods: the persistence of a Gothic Renaissance structure and its redevelopment according to the canons of the 19th century. Its central location in the village, close to the communal cemetery (Rue Yvonne de la Seiglire), highlights its pivotal role in local life, both spiritual and memorial.
The church property belongs to the municipality of Baigneaux, and its state of conservation, although marked by transformations, allows us to study the evolution of religious architectural practices in Gironde. The available sources (Wikipedia, Monumentum, Merimée base) confirm its heritage importance, while indicating an approximate geographical location (accuracy noted 5/10), perhaps reflecting documentary gaps in its immediate environment.
