Origin and history

The church of Saint-Pierre-et-Saint-Paul de Courcité is a Catholic building located in the town of this town of Mayennais, on the edge of the departmental road 13. It replaces an old building described as "great and beautiful", with organry, and also houses a priory. Its Gothic architecture is singularized by a bell tower entirely built of stone, while its stained glass of the choir represents St Peter and St Paul, patrons of the church.

The history of the church is marked by local traditions, such as grain offerings deposited on the day of St Sebastian or the search for hemp dolls before Easter, placed on the altar of the Virgin. A notable episode took place on 3 March 1906, during the inventory of the Church's property: the parishioners resisted the gendarmes for more than two hours, keeping the doors closed despite the presence of the mayor and the rural guard.

Designed by the architect Mr. Tessier de Mayenne, the present church perpetuates a religious and community heritage rooted in local practices. Historical sources, such as La Mayenne from village to village (1985) or Le Patrimoine des communes de la Mayenne (2002), underline its central role in the spiritual and social life of Courcité.
