Origin and history
The church Saint-Pierre-et-Saint-Paul de Courtenay is a Catholic religious building located in the Loiret department, in the Centre-Val de Loire region. It is distinguished by an architecture combining several periods: a Romanesque bell tower dating from the first half of the 12th century, and a Renaissance nave built in the 16th century. The central nave, vaulted with arêtiers, is flanked by also vaulted bottoms, to which were added lateral chapels after the construction of the three naves.
The bell tower, of primitive Romanesque style, has ancient architectural features, such as a small Roman apparatus used in arches of bays and trimmings. It is likely that he was part of an older church, linked to the abbey of Saint Peter of Courtenay, founded in 1132 under the reign of Louis VI the Gros. monks of Cluny were detached to direct this monastery, enjoying privileges granted by the king.
The church was classified as historical monuments by decree on 17 January 1911. It is now owned by the commune of Courtenay. His history is also marked by the presence of Simon Legras, the building's principal prior, although little detailed information on his role is available in current sources.
