Origin and history

The church of Saint-Pierre-et-Saint-Paul de Fouesnant, located in the Finistère in Brittany, is a mostly Romanesque building, mentioned as early as the Cartulaire de Quimperlé (1084-1107). Its construction dates from the first or second third of the 12th century, according to historians Anne Autissier and Marc Déceneux. Although its exterior was largely redesigned, especially in the 18th century after the collapse of the central bell tower in 1754, it retained a nave and transept of Romanesque origin, as well as forty-eight capitals carved of geometric and vegetal motifs, characteristic of southern Brittany.

Over the centuries, the church has undergone several architectural changes. A flamboyant southern porch, probably from the 15th century, was added, as was a calvary erected in 1661 on the placister. The western façade and the lower side were re-established in the 18th century, while a complete restoration was carried out in the late 19th century by Joseph Bigot. The building, classified as Historic Monument in 1930, also houses a modern organ inaugurated in 2000, made by Henri Saby.

The church was at the heart of Fouesnant's parish and social life. noble families, such as the Guernisacs and the Franquetot de Coigny, held preeminence rights, attested by documents from the 17th and 18th centuries. Pardon, celebrated each year on the Sunday following the Saint Peter (29 June), perpetuates a religious tradition rooted in the region. Its Latin cross plan, Romanesque arcades and capitals make it one of the best preserved buildings in Brittany, alongside those of Loctudy or Priziac.

Fouesnant's Romanesque sculpture is distinguished by its homogeneity and technical mastery. The capitals, adorned with abstract motifs (damiers, entrelacs, stars) and schematic figures, reflect local influences, especially those of Pays Pourlet. Although some elements, such as the central lantern tower, disappeared after the storm of 1754, architectural traces (stairs in a pillar, vault primers) attest to the past existence. The building thus illustrates the evolution of religious styles and uses in Brittany over nearly nine centuries.
