Origin and history
The church Saint-Pierre-et-Saint-Paul de Sourzac, located in New Aquitaine in the Dordogne department, is a Gothic building rebuilt in the 15th century after the destruction of the Hundred Years War. It includes Romanesque remains of the ancient Prioral Church, including arches on the western side, bearing witness to its medieval origin as Sanctus Petrus de Sorziaco (late 11th century). Its massive bell tower, Gothic portal and side chapels illustrate this architectural duality.
The church has been listed as historical monuments since 6 December 1948, a protection extended to Romanesque remains. In 1955, its surroundings (presbytery and enclosure) were classified as a listed site, highlighting its heritage importance. Inside, ancient wall paintings, carved vault keys and a high altar adorn the nave and transept, while a funerary liter remains south side.
The building, owned by the commune of Sourzac, overlooks the Isle River between the departmental road 6089 and the village. Its architecture thus combines Romanesque heritage (arcs, lost dome) and Gothic (voûts, chapels), reflecting successive reconstructions. The sources (Wikipedia, Monumentum) confirm its central role in the local religious and historical landscape.
The protected elements include the church itself and the remains of the old dome church, according to the 1948 decree. The Insee de Sourzac code (24543) and its location in the district of Périgueux (Dordogne) specify its territorial anchor. No information is available on possible characters related to its construction or history.
