Origin and history
The church Saint-Pierre-et-Saint-Paul de Coulonges, located in the present-day New Aquitaine, has a composite structure reflecting two major construction periods. The two eastern spans, dating from the 12th century, are vaulted in a broken cradle and end with a flat bedside, characteristic of Poitevin Romanesque art. The impostes of the choir, in quarter round, follow a regional tradition peculiar to this period. This sober architectural party contrasts with the three western spans, added in the 15th century, whose veined vaults fall back on pilasters, marking a transition towards the Gothic.
The north facade s. anime of a flamboyant portal, adorned with a braided lintel and carved capitals, testifying to the influence of the late Gothic. This portal, the only element protected by a decree of 28 June 1937, is a remarkable example of the religious art of the late Middle Ages. The consecration of the building, attested to on 27 September 1494, coincided with the completion of the 15th century works. Finally, some aspects of the church were modified between the late 19th and early 20th centuries, without altering its dominant historical character.
The church, owned by the municipality of Coulonges (code Insee 86084), is part of the religious landscape of Poitou, an area marked by a dense settlement of Romanesque and Gothic buildings. His double term, dedicated to the apostles Peter and Paul, emphasizes his attachment to medieval Christian tradition. Although its exact location is approximate (level 5/10 depending on the sources), the address chosen, 3 Route de la Planche, allows to identify its location in the historic village.
