Origin and history
The church of Saint-Pierre, located in Val de Virvée (Commune of Salignac, Gironde), is a religious building dating back to the 12th century. From this period remain the bedside (polygonal apse and two apsidioles), part of the southern transept, the western facade and the walls of the nave. The small Romanesque windows, now walled, as well as the upper part of the triumphal arch, still bear witness to this medieval era.
In the following centuries, the church has undergone significant changes, especially in the 15th, 16th and 19th centuries. These transformations may have altered some original elements, such as Romanesque windows, while enriching its architecture. The building, surrounded by a cemetery, is oriented according to Christian tradition, with a bedside in the east.
The St. Peter's Church was listed as a historical monument by order of 19 December 2005. This protection covers the entire building, including its oldest parts and later additions. Owned by the municipality, it remains an active place of worship and an architectural testimony of stylistic evolutions between the Middle Ages and the modern era.
Available sources, including the Mérimée and Monumentum bases, confirm its address under both Salignac and Val de Virvée, reflecting a complex administrative location. GPS coordinates place it precisely at 10 Rue de l'Église Saint-Pierre, in the Val de Virvée, in Gironde.
