Origin and history

Saint Peter's Church is a Catholic religious building located in the village of Penerf, Damgan, in the Morbihan department of Brittany. Its initial construction dates back to the 17th century, although it probably replaced an older building. It is placed under the double patronage of St Peter, protector of fishermen, and St Paul, reflecting the importance of maritime activities for the local community.

In 1843 Penerf obtained parish status in Damgan, marking an administrative recognition of his own identity. The church is then enlarged with the addition of a chapel dedicated to the Virgin and the modification of her bell tower. Between 1848 and 1853, the north and south wings were built, and restorations were carried out during the 19th century. The building houses ex-votos, including models of traditional boats and a paper document, testimonies of the devotion of sailors.

The church choir was enriched in 1936 by a mosaic made by Louis Barillet, financed by parishioners' donations. This work illustrates scenes of their daily life, mixing religious dimension and local anchoring. The ensemble reflects the architectural and spiritual evolution of the place, linked to the maritime and agricultural history of the region.

Today, St Peter's Church remains a symbol of Damgan's religious and cultural heritage, bearing witness to local traditions and popular piety throughout the centuries. Its architecture and decorative elements, such as ex-votos, offer an overview of community life and beliefs shared by the people of Penerf and its surroundings.
