Origin and history

Saint-Pierre de Faverges-Seythenex Church, located in Haute-Savoie, is a neo-classical building designed by architects Prosper Dunant and Roch in the early 19th century. It replaces a medieval chapel considered old, in a village that had moved under the protection of a castle in the Middle Ages. Its construction, launched in 1830, is part of a parish reorganization, with Faverges being established as an independent parish in 1803.

The initial project of Prosper Dunant, proposed in 1821, is retained after reports confirming the degradation of the old chapel (1823, 1825). The work, supervised by Dunant and Roch, resulted in a solemn consecration by the bishop of Annecy, Louis Rendu, on 13 April 1844. The "neo-classical Sardinian" style, inspired by the Piedmont models, marks a break with traditional local architecture, although criticized for its conventional aspect.

The site of Faverges houses an ancient Christian history, dating back at least to the sixth century with a first church dedicated to Saint John the Baptist on the Gallo-Roman vicus of Viuz. Until 1763, the village depended spiritually on the priory of Viuz, before gaining its autonomy. Today, St Peter's church houses a 17th century bell classified as historical monuments, a witness to this past.

The building integrates into a landscape marked by the hill of the medieval castle and the road leading to the Pass of Tamié. It belongs to the parish of Saint Joseph in Faverges, illustrating its central role in local religious life since the 19th century. Its architecture, though sober, reflects the transalpine influences of the time, in a region then undergoing social and urban change.
