Origin and history
The church of Saint-Pierre de Savigny-sous-Faye, built in the 12th century, underwent major Gothic changes in the 15th century. It reflects the technical challenges faced by artisans, in particular to adapt the vaults to new architectural standards. The arch keys, decorated with the arms of a dolphin from France (Poitou County), date from this late period, reflecting local political influence.
The building housed a gissant containing the relics of Saint Fort, an object of active pilgrimage until the 19th century. Mothers brought their children there to plead for health and vigor, to the point that an expansion was envisaged in 1864. This persistent cult emphasizes the social and spiritual role of the church in the rural community.
Ranked a Historic Monument in 1994, the church benefited from a 10-year restoration (outdoor, nave, choir), crowned in 2014 by a Romanesque Night celebrating its light. This event, marked by a concert and the presence of local elected officials, highlighted its architectural heritage and territorial anchor.
The sources (Wikipedia, Monumentum) confirm its status as communal property and its openness to the public. Its history thus combines popular devotion, stylistic evolutions and living heritage, typical of the rural churches of New Aquitaine.
