Origin and history
Saint-Pierre de Montilly Church is a religious building of Romanesque architecture, built in the early twelfth century. It is distinguished by its unique nave vaulted in third-point, characteristic of the churches of this period. Originally, it had a north side, demolished in the 19th century during restoration work, which also saw the addition of absidioles, a western span and a bell tower. The apse preserves arches between windows, a notable architectural detail.
The church was listed as historic monuments by order of 28 December 1926, thereby recognizing its heritage value. The changes made in 1876 and 1892 partially altered its original structure, but they also reflected the adjustments necessary to preserve it. Today, the building belongs to the commune of Montilly and remains an important testimony of the Romanesque religious heritage in Bourbonnais.
Located in the Allier department, in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region, the Saint-Pierre church is part of a territory marked by a strong presence of medieval religious buildings. Its inscription in the Mérimée base and its precise location (5 Place du Souvenir, Montilly) make it an accessible and documented monument, although its GPS location is considered of poor accuracy (level 5/10).
