Origin and history

Saint-Pons de Baugy Church is a Catholic religious building located in the municipality of Baugy, Saône-et-Loire (Bourgogne-Franche-Comté). Built in the 11th century, it illustrates the Romanesque architecture typical of the region, with a unique nave, a chorus span and an apse. Its portal adorned with carved capitals representing musical animals bears witness to medieval artistic know-how.

The church is classified as a historical monument by decree of 22 October 1913, recognizing its heritage value. Among its peculiarities is the presence of a window, a small opening in the wall allowing lepers, excluded from society, to follow religious offices without entering the building. This practice reflects the health and social measures of the medieval era.

The building now belongs to the municipality of Baugy. Its history and architectural elements, such as the unique nave and sculptures, make it an important testimony of the religious and cultural heritage of Burgundy-Franche-Comté.
