Origin and history
The church Saint-Privat de Saint-Privat-des-Prés, located in the present commune of Saint Privat in Périgord (Dordogne, Nouvelle-Aquitaine), is a Romanesque religious building built in the 12th century. It belonged to a Benedictine priory and is distinguished by its typical architecture: a nave of three bays vaulted with ridges, a square forearm surmounted by a dome on pendants, and a semicircular apse adorned with a painting. Its bell tower, initially defensive, bears witness to the adaptations made during the Hundred Years War, probably in the 14th century, with the addition of a defensive bahut above the apse and a partial reconstruction of the east facade.
Ranked a historic monument in 1862, the church underwent important restorations between 1876 and 1878, including the nave, the foot of the apse and the western access. This work modified some of the original elements, such as the porch and some of the nave, at this time. The choir, vaulted in cul-de-four, preserves paintings made in the 18th century, adding an artistic dimension to its architectural heritage. The building thus illustrates a historical stratification, mixing Romanesque elements, late medieval adaptations and modern embellishments.
The village of Saint-Privat-des-Prés, whose church is the emblematic monument, has undergone a recent administrative evolution: the commune merged in 2017 with Festalemps and Saint-Antoine-Cumond to form the new town of Saint Privat in Périgord. This territory, marked by a rich civil and religious heritage (castles, fortified house, local museum), is part of a typical perigordin landscape, between the Rizonne and Pontet valleys. The church, a communal property, remains a major testimony of Benedictine history and regional defensive architecture.
