Origin and history

The Saint Quentin church of Athias-sous-Laon is a religious building whose oldest elements, such as choir capitals and baptismal fonts, bear witness to a Romanesque heritage. His original plan, also novel, has undergone many changes over the centuries. The vault of the portal, particularly designed, is a characteristic addition of the 19th century, illustrating the successive restorations that shaped its present appearance.

Located in the department of Aisne, this church is a historical landmark of the municipality of Athies-sous-Laon. Its bell tower, in particular, experienced a striking episode in 2016, when a lightning flash destroyed the clocks and the electrical system. The restoration work, completed in October 2017, restored the building to its splendour, while preserving its architectural heritage.

The Saint Quentin Church is part of a regional context where religious buildings play a central role in community life. In the Hauts-de-France, these monuments are often witnesses to artistic and social developments, as evidenced by the transformations of this church, mixing Romanesque styles and subsequent additions. Their preservation remains a major challenge for rural communities, where they are strong identity symbols.
