Origin and history
The church Saint-Remi d'Anjeux is a Catholic religious building located in the department of Haute-Saône, Burgundy-Franche-Comté. Built in the 15th and 16th centuries, it is distinguished by its built-up bell tower, an architectural peculiarity not widespread in this region. This type of bell tower, characterized by a two-sided roof, is a notable part of its heritage.
The church was listed as historic monuments on February 1, 1944, recognizing its heritage value. This ranking demonstrates its historical and architectural importance in the local context. It is located precisely at the address 2 Rue du Calvaire, in the commune of Anjeux, and belongs to the municipality.
At the time of its construction in the 15th and 16th centuries, the Haute-Saône was a region marked by a rural and artisanal economy. Churches, like Saint Remi, played a central role in community life, serving as a place of worship, assembly and symbol of the Christian faith. Their architecture often reflected popular techniques and styles at this time, while adapting to local resources.
The department of Haute-Saône, where Anjeux is located, was then under the influence of the Dukes of Burgundy before passing under the French royal authority. The churches of that time were usually built or renovated thanks to the donations of the local lords or parishioners, although the sources do not specify the specific sponsors of the Saint-Remi church.
