Origin and history

The Saint-Rémi de Coulommes-la-Montagne church, dedicated to Remi de Reims, is a Romanesque building dating from the 12th century. Located in Champagne-Ardenne (now Grand Est), it retains original elements such as its bell tower overlooking the transept cross, its porch and its pillars. Ranked a historic monument in 1920, it bears traces of a bombardment that occurred the previous year, while sheltering carved capitals and remains of polychromy.

Inside, a 14th-century statue of the Virgin and Child illustrates Champagne art, while a Virgin in glory on a crescent moon and a Saint Michael terrorizing the dragon complete the iconography. A window fragment dated 1558 remains, showing post-medieval additions. The church, still surrounded by its historic cemetery, houses tombs of the Pin de la Guérivière family, whose coats of arms appear on an inner bench.

The 1920 classification protects the entire parish building, owned by the commune. Its present state thus combines Romanesque traces (turn, porch) and Gothic or Renaissance elements (glass), reflecting an architectural and liturgical history that has continued since the Middle Ages. Mentions of polychromy and capitals also underline the decorative importance of the building, characteristic of the Champagne churches of this period.
