Origin and history

The church of Saint-Remi de Laigneville, located in the Oise department in the Hauts-de-France region, is a building with a variety of architectural influences, ranging from archaic to flamboyant Gothic. Its built-up bell tower, whose bays flanked by columnettes evoke the beginning of the twelfth century, contrasts with its arched base, typical of primitive Gothic in the middle of the same century. The nave, built in the second half of the twelfth century, was later vaulted in the thirteenth century with sexpartite vaults, a rare technique for rural naves. The eastern parts, including the square hall choir, probably date back to the 14th century, although their stylistic elements blend late radiant Gothic and flamboyant announcements.

The irregular transept, with a southern crusillon cut into the rock, and the ancient arched absidiole in cul-de-four, testify to distinct construction campaigns. The smaller northern crusillon is accompanied by a rectangular chapel, while the choir-halle, open with radiant filling windows, reflects a stylistic transition. Ranked a historic monument in 1911, the church was restored in 1923, but its gradual abandonment from the 1960s led to its decommissioning in 2014. A legacy of 250,000 euros in 2023 aims at its renovation, stressing its heritage importance despite its state of degradation.

The history of Laigneville, linked to the abbey of Saint-Symphorien de Beauvais, is marked by the presence of a Templar Commandery and a maladry. The parish, dependent on Monchy-Saint-Éloi in the 19th century, saw its church replaced by a modern chapel in 1937. Archaeological analysis reveals successive changes, including the demolition of the early 14th-century abside and the addition of a western portal at the end of the 13th century. The stained glass windows, largely destroyed, and the furniture, reduced to a few elements like a bell classified from 1670, complete this complex historical picture.
