Origin and history

The church of Saint-Rémi de Lor is located in Condé-sur-Suippe, a commune of the Hauts-de-France whose name appears for the first time in 906 in the form Condatum super fluvium Suppiam. This toponym, of Gaulish origin (condate, meaning "confluent"), underlines the geographical importance of the site at the confluence of the Suippe and the Aisne. The village, mentioned in a cartular of Saint-Thierry Abbey in Reims in 1126, has known various appellations over the centuries, reflecting its historical anchor in the region.

The municipality, now classified as a rural with scattered habitat, is part of the Reims attraction area. Its territory, mostly agricultural (80.2% in 2018), is crossed by navigable rivers such as Aisne and Suippe, which have played a key role in its economic and social development. The Saint-Rémi Church, although little documented in the available sources, is part of this context of local life marked by agricultural activities, river trade and a community organization centered around religious buildings.

The region's degraded ocean climate, with cold winters and moderate rainfall, influenced local lifestyles and architecture. Historical maps, such as Cassini (18th century), show an ancient occupation of the territory, while censuses show a stable population, with 357 inhabitants in 2023. The church, as a religious monument, would have served as a place of assembly and worship for this rural community, in a landscape dominated by arable land and forests.
