Origin and history
The church of Saint-Remy de Ceffonds, located in the Haute-Marne department in the Grand Est region, is a religious building dating back to the twelfth century. From this Romanesque period remains mainly the tower-clocher, located at the cross of the transept. The rest of the building, rebuilt at the beginning of the 16th century, adopts a flamboyant Gothic style, with influences of the first Renaissance visible near the facade, notably on the portal dated 1562.
The vaults of the church have various dates (1635, 1669, 1741), reflecting a progressive construction or renovation. The nave, financed by the village community, contrasts with its rustic appearance with the choir, commissioned by the Abbés de Montier-en-Der, which stands out for its five-sided apse of high architectural quality. The church also houses an exceptional set of glass windows from the first third of the 16th century, attributed to the school of Troyes, as well as some panels of the 15th century.
Ranked a historic monument in 1862, Saint-Remy Church illustrates the evolution of architectural styles between the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. Its portal, stained glass windows and modillons bear witness to the religious and artistic heritage of Haute-Marne. The differences in style between the nave and choir also reflect the social and economic dynamics of the time, where church sponsors invested in more ambitious achievements than local communities.
