Origin and history

The church of Saint-Rémy de Mittainville, located in the Yvelines in Île-de-France, has its origins in the early seventeenth century. According to sources, its construction started around 1600, according to Dion. This place of worship, typical of the rural religious architecture of the time, reflects the spiritual and community needs of a changing village under the Old Regime.

The structure of the church, made in 1651 by Jacques Laroche, is a remarkable element attested by an inscription engraved on the second entrance of the nave. This technical detail highlights the importance of local artisans in preserving and embellishing religious buildings. The monument also underwent subsequent modifications related to its immediate environment, such as the expansion of the cemetery in 1891, and its displacement in 1902, illustrating the constant adaptation of sacred spaces to the changing needs of the population.

Ranked among the Historical Monuments by order of 12 April 1972, Saint-Rémy Church is now owned by Mittainville. Its listing in the inventory bears witness to its heritage value, both for its architecture and for its role in local history. The accuracy of its location, assessed as "passable" (note 5/10), and the photographic archives available, such as those of Lionel Allorge under Creative Commons license, help document this heritage.

The historical context of Mittainville in the 17th century was marked by a rural society organized around the Church and local lords. The parish churches, like Saint-Rémy, served not only as a place of worship, but also as a gathering centre for community events, baptisms, marriages and burials. Their construction and maintenance often reflected the prosperity or economic difficulties of parishes, as well as the influence of local artisans and donors.
