Origin and history

The church of Saint-Rieul de Brenouille, located in the Oise (Hauts-de-France), is a religious building with various architectural influences, reflecting its many construction campaigns. Its oldest parts, the cross of the transept and the north crusillon, date from the middle of the 12th century, while the Gothic-style hall choir was erected in the 14th century. The nave and the lower side, of classical style, were rebuilt in the 1780s, shortly before the French Revolution, marking a notable stylistic transition.

The church is dedicated to Saint Rieul, the first bishop of Senlis, a rarity in the area where few buildings are dedicated to him. Its history is marked by successive changes, such as the northern lateral chapel added at the end of the 12th century or the 17th century sacristy. Ranked a historic monument in 1927, it was restored in 1962 and in the early 21st century, revealing ancient murals. Today it depends on the parish of Sainte-Maxence of Pont-Sainte-Maxence.

The church furniture includes classified funeral slabs, including those of the Le Bel and Trossy families (17th century), as well as a bronze bell of 1777, classified as a historic monument. The building also retains remarkable architectural elements, such as a typical hall choir of the Oise middle valley, a classical cradle vault in the nave, and medieval murals rediscovered in 2012.

The exterior of the church has a sober classical facade, dominated by an oversized portal, while the bell tower, rebuilt at the end of the eighteenth century, contains elements inspired by Romanesque architecture. The southern cruise, on the other hand, preserves original Romanesque features, such as its flat buttresses and its window in the middle of the hanger. The cemetery surrounding the church, surrounded by a 17th century wall, adds to its historical character.

The church's history is also linked to local conflicts, such as the disputes between parishioners and decimators in the 18th century, resolved by a notarial act in 1789. During the Revolution, the church remained open to worship, unlike many others. Today, it remains an active place of heritage, with exhibitions organized by the local association Heritage, Art & Traditions.
