Origin and history
The church of Saint-Rigomer de Colombiers, located in Normandy, is a religious building whose initial nave dates back to the 11th century. It was enlarged in the 16th and 17th centuries, when its small Romanesque windows were closed and replaced by trifoliated berries. Saint Rigomer, hermit and preacher of Saosnois in the sixth century, is the patron saint of this parish, whose existence has been attested since the twelfth century by an episcopal charter.
The August 1944 bombardment severely damaged the building, requiring structural repairs such as the laying of metal fire and the reconstruction of the south wall. In 1991, major works revealed the original Romanesque windows, hidden since the seventeenth century. The church contains classified elements, including a 17th-XVIIIth century high altar, medieval statues (XIVth-XVIIth) and a 15th century retable fragment.
The parish is mentioned in medieval documents, including a vidimus of 1190-1221 confirming the possession of the tithe by the abbey of Perseigne. The building thus illustrates almost nine centuries of religious and architectural history, between Romanesque heritage, Gothic transformations and contemporary restorations.
