Origin and history

The church of Saint-Roch-et-de-l'Assomption-de-Notre-Dame, located in the village of Clairavaux (Creuse, Nouvelle-Aquitaine), has its origins in the 12th century. The original Romanesque building consists of a nave of four vaulted bays in a broken cradle, extended by a flat-side choir. Its history is linked to the abbey of Saint-Martial de Limoges, which held its patronage from 1094, reflecting the religious and political ties of the region in medieval times.

In the 15th century, the church was enriched with a vaulted southern chapel, reflecting the architectural evolution towards the Gothic. The west facade, dated 1545 (inscription on a medallion), has a basket handle portal framed by broken archivolts, as well as a triangular pediment bell tower. These additions illustrate the aesthetic and functional transformations of the Renaissance building, a period of artistic and religious renewal.

The interior contains furniture classified since 1913, including a baroque high altar (1651-1725) with retable and painting of the Assumption, as well as two 16th century polychrome statues (Mary Egyptian and Zosime of Palestine). The soil preserves funerary slabs (XIII-15th centuries) and fragmentary murals, including a rare 13th century agricultural calendar, offering an overview of medieval rural and liturgical life.

Ranked a historic monument in 1957, the church historically depended on St. Martial Abbey, highlighting its central role in Clairavaux's spiritual and community life. The stone ravens visible today recall the existence of an ancient porch, disappeared, while the bay mowed above the gate evokes the architectural innovations of the era.

The protection of the building and its furniture reflects the desire to preserve a religious, artistic and historical heritage, marking the identity of the Limousin. The classified objects, such as statues or retables, bear witness to local devotion and cultural exchanges between the 12th and 16th centuries, the pivotal periods for sacred art in France.
