Origin and history
The Church of Saint-Romain de Guitinières is a Catholic religious building located in the department of Charente-Maritime in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region. Built in the 12th century according to a Latin cross plan, it illustrates the Romanesque style by its ornamental sculptures (rins, geometric motifs, animal and human figures) and its committed columns. Its bedside and portal recall those of Saint Eutrope de Saintes Basilica, suggesting a link with the local artisans of the time, such as those of Salignac-de-Mirambeau.
Fortified in the 17th century, the church has crenellated side walls housing a round road, reflecting the historical tensions of the region. The bell tower, partially destroyed during the Wars of Religion, was rebuilt while retaining original Romanesque elements. The northern chapel, in Gothic style, contrasts with the southern chapel, rebuilt in the 18th century. These transformations reflect architectural changes and successive defensive needs.
The building has been protected as historical monuments since 1925, with an additional inscription in 2000. Although attached to the parish of Saint-Eutrope in the country of Jonzaca, Saint-Romain Church has not been in worship since the 2010s. Its Romanesque sculptures, of great iconographic diversity, and its turbulent history make it a remarkable heritage of Charente-Maritime.
