Origin and history

The Saint-Romain church, located in the Puy-de-Dôme department, finds its origins at the end of the 12th century, although its current structure dates mainly from the 15th century. This building, originally dedicated to Saint Romain, has been honouring Saint Bonaventure since the 17th century. Its architecture, marked by Gothic elements, was enriched by successive restorations, notably after damage caused by a Huguenot attack in 1601.

In the 19th century, the church underwent major changes, such as the reconstruction of the bell tower in 1811 and the belfry in 1898. A major interior renovation, carried out in 1913 under the leadership of Abbé Michy, modernized the building while preserving its Gothic sculpted details and paintings. The stained glass windows, dating back to 1911, as well as the bells (1714 for the oldest, 1834 for the others) testify to its evolution over the centuries.

Ranked as a historic monument since 1994, Saint-Romain Church illustrates a rare example of harmony between a medieval building and subsequent developments. Its 19th-century furnishings and interior decorations contrast with its sober exterior appearance, reflecting the architectural and religious tastes of successive eras. The property of the municipality remains a place of worship and a protected local heritage.
