Origin and history

The Saint-Rustic church of Aulnat, located in the department of Puy-de-Dôme, finds its roots in the fifth century. In 446 Rustic (or Rusticus), the eighth bishop of Clermont, was buried there, attesting to the early existence of a place of worship on this site. This first historical mention highlights the ancient Christian anchor of the region, linked to the Clermontese episcopate.

The present building was erected in 838, reusing the foundations of an earlier church. The architects scrupulously retained the original proportions, especially those of the pillars and columns, whose capitals were reproduced in identical form. This choice reveals a desire to perpetuate an architectural heritage, perhaps linked to the memory of Saint Rustic.

The choir, inspired by models of high antiquity, dates from the 12th century, marking a stylistic evolution towards Romanesque art. The nave was redesigned in the 19th century, while the bell tower, built around 1840, saw its arrow restored in 1900 by architect Ponchon. These transformations illustrate the successive adaptations of the church to the liturgical and aesthetic needs of each era.

The architecture of Saint-Rustique thus combines distinct historical strata: a paleo-Christian substrate, a Carolingian structure, Romanesque additions and 19th-century modernizations. This architectural palimpsest makes it a rare testimony of the cultural and artistic continuity in Auvergne, from late antiquity to contemporary times.
