Origin and history

The Church of Saint-Samson in Illifaut is a Catholic religious building located in the municipality of Illifaut in the Côtes-d'Armor department of Brittany. Its construction is part of the architectural landscape of the 19th century, a period marked by a revival of religious buildings in France. The church is distinguished by its Latin cross plan, typical of the churches of that time, and by the presence of a bell tower embedded in the nave.

The first stone of the church was laid on 11 Oct. 1885, marking the beginning of a construction project that culminated in his blessing on 28 July 1889. This relatively short period of time for the time demonstrated a local desire to provide the commune with a modern and functional place of worship. The building consists of a nave with low side, a choir flanked by two chapels, and a transept, characteristic elements of ecclesiastical architecture of the late 19th century.

Inside, the church houses a memorial dedicated to the victims of the First World War. This monument recalls the central role that churches played in the collective memory of local communities, serving as both a place of prayer and a place of remembrance. The Church of Saint-Samson, by its history and architecture, thus illustrates the importance of religious heritage in the social and cultural life of Brittany at this time.
