Origin and history
The Saint-Samson church in the Somme department in the Hauts-de-France region is a Catholic building built in the 16th century. It is distinguished by its architecture combining stone and basilical plan, with a flamboyant Gothic choir raised in relation to the nave. The building has been protected as historical monuments since 1920 for the church itself, and since 1951 for the cemetery surrounding it, highlighting its heritage and religious importance.
The nave, preceded by a massive bell tower having lost its arrow, is vaulted with wood, while the choir has stone vaults. The church houses remarkable furniture, including a polychrome wooden statue of Saint Quentin and a Virgin with the Child, both dated from the 16th century, as well as an eighteenth-century pulpit to preach. These elements reflect the artistic and historical richness of the site, reflecting the stylistic and religious evolutions of their time.
The classification of the church and its cemetery as historical monuments illustrates the desire to preserve a major architectural and cultural heritage of Picardia. The location of Mediumville, south of Abbeville, in a territory marked by medieval and modern history, reinforces the historical interest of this site. The building, owned by the municipality, remains a place of memory and worship, anchored in the local religious and social landscape.
