Origin and history
The church Saint-Saturnin de Coutures, located in the Dordogne department in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region, is a 12th century Romanesque building. It was first mentioned in 1282 as Parochia de Culturis. Its architecture combines a three-span nave, a hemicircular bedside decorated with modillons, and a massive bell tower to the west. The church was fortified during the Hundred Years' War, as evidenced by the raised walls and a visible creek on ancient representations.
Between the 12th and 18th centuries, the church underwent several major changes. In the 18th century, two side chapels were added, forming a false transept, before the northern chapel was destroyed in 1840. The bell tower and western facade were rebuilt in the 19th century. The building, which was historically dependent on Bourdeilles County and then on the châtellenie of the same name, was once connected to a castle that was now extinct, accessible to lords via a private gallery.
The Saint Saturnin church was listed as historical monuments on 17 December 1947. Its interior preserves remarkable elements such as cupolas on pendants, committed columns, and a raised floor of about a meter. Outside, the Romanesque bedside, decorated with nine arches in the middle of the hangar and remodeled flat foothills, illustrates the architectural evolutions of the building throughout the centuries.
The parish of Coutures, integrated into the county of Périgord in 1445, reflects the turbulent history of the region, marked by medieval conflicts and post-revolutionary religious redevelopments. The church, owned by the commune, remains a testimony of the successive adaptations of a place of worship through more than eight centuries of history.
