The Church in its entirety (Box C 7): inscription by order of 23 December 2008
Origin and history
The Saint-Saturnin church of Mayac, mentioned for the first time in 1120 in the cartular of Tourtoirac, bears witness to an ancient religious occupation. Burials found on the site date back to the High Middle Ages, suggesting an earlier origin of the current Romanesque building. From this period remain the base and part of the south elevation, as well as the portal, characteristic of the Romanesque architecture of the twelfth century.
In 1859, part of the nave and its walls collapsed, requiring partial reconstruction in the following years. Despite these works, the church retains its status as a Historic Monument, fully protected by a decree of 23 December 2008. Today, it belongs to the municipality of Mayac and remains an emblematic vestige of the local medieval heritage.
The location of the church, although documented (address: 11 Chemin de Mayac, 24420 Mayac), is considered to be a priori satisfactory accuracy (note 6/10). Its history reflects the conservation challenges of rural buildings, between medieval heritage and modern interventions.
