Origin and history

The Saint-Saturnin church of Meschers-sur-Gironde, listed as a Historic Monument, is a building whose history spans from the 14th to the 19th century. Its particularity lies in its bell tower, the only vestige of the 15th century, preserving architectural features of the 12th century despite its flamboyant Gothic style. This bell tower, inscribed by decree of 23 February 1925, is distinguished by an ordinance of archatures applied under a very open floor, typical of medieval belfries.

The reconstruction of the church in 1837 erased most of the traces of earlier periods, with the exception of the bell tower. The latter, owned by the commune, bears witness to the transition between medieval and modern times, mixing old structural elements with a late Gothic aesthetic. The present building, located in Church Square, remains a symbol of local heritage, open to the visit in the communal setting.

Available sources, including Monumentum and Merimée data, indicate that the church is located at 2 Place de l'Eglise, in the department of Charente-Maritime (code Insee 17230). Although the accuracy of its location is considered mediocre (note 5/10), its bell tower, a protected element, is a major historical landmark for Meschers-sur-Gironde and its region, the New Aquitaine.
