Origin and history

The Saint-Sauveur church of Ham-en-Artois, founded in 1080 by Enguerrand, Lord of Lillers, is one of the few remains of the original Benedictine abbey. At the time, it was attached to Saint-Sauveur Abbey in Charroux, before becoming independent in 1252. Its architecture blends Romanesque (Nef of the 12th century) and Gothic (collaterals and crusillons revamped in the 15th and 17th centuries), with a bell tower and Renaissance-style choir added in 1681 and 1695.

The painted vault of Agnes de Witternesse, dated the second quarter of the 14th century, is a remarkable element of the building. Classified as a historical monument in 1913 for the church and in 1980 for the vault, this building illustrates the architectural and religious evolution of the region, from its medieval foundation to the additions of the 17th and 18th centuries. The site also preserves the home of the abbots, the last witness of the ancient abbey.

The building reflects the successive artistic influences, from the Gothic to the Gothic brick typical of northern France. Its ranking among historical monuments underlines its heritage importance, both for its architecture and for its history linked to pilgrimages and monastic life. The presence of the vault of Agnes de Witternesse adds a rare funerary and artistic dimension for this period.
