Origin and history

The Saint-Sauveur church of Saint-Malo, also called the Saint-Sauveur chapel, was originally the chapel of the Hotel-Dieu of the city. Founded in 1253 by Bishop Geoffroy near the church of Saint-Thomas (now Vauban Square), this Hôtel-Dieu was transferred in 1607 to its current location, rue Saint-Sauveur. The present building was rebuilt between 1738 and 1744 by architect Thomas Poussin, according to the plans of engineer Simeon Garangeau, with a follow-up of the works by Michel Marlon. It replaced the old chapel, integrated into the hospital yard.

The Hôtel-Dieu was completely destroyed during the 1944 bombings during World War II, leaving only the church as a vestige. It has been listed as a historical monument since 14 February 1946 and was restored and converted into a cultural space in 1974. Disused of worship, it has hosted exhibitions, concerts and events, such as the Festival Classique au Large or retrospectives by local and national artists.

Among the notable exhibitions are those dedicated to Marin Marie (2009), Gotlib (2014), or Contemplations (2017-2018), presenting sacred works from Breton of the 16th–15th centuries. The place thus combines historical heritage and cultural dynamism, while testifying to the hospital and religious history of Saint-Malo.

Located at 8 rue Saint-Sauveur, in the intramural district, the church is distinguished by its 18th century architecture, typical of the Malouin reconstructions. Its status as a historical monument and its location make it an emblematic site, both memory of the city and living space dedicated to art and culture.
