Origin and history

The church of Saint-Sébastien de Lorcières, located in the Cantal department in Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, is a Catholic building built in the 2nd half of the 16th century. It is dedicated to Saint Sebastian and is distinguished by its architecture unchanged since its construction, despite the wars of Religion which had partially damaged it in 1540. The building preserves vestiges of its past, as the remains of an abbatial house redeveloped as a sacristy under the monarchy of July (1830-1848).

In 1872, the church underwent a major renovation: the roof was enhanced to adopt a more pronounced slope, while the interior was decorated with paintings. In 1905, the bell tower, the central part of the building, was repaired, followed by a full interior repaint in 1935. An architectural peculiarity lies in its exterior stone staircase, leading to the balustrade of the belfry, supported by crows with triple redents. These changes, although late, did not alter the historic character of the site.

The church houses an exceptional set of four pre-revolutionary bells, dated 1491, 1511, 1607 and 1683, ranked among the oldest in the Cantal. Two of them (1491 and 1683) have been protected as historical monuments since 1987. These bells, which are housed in the middle of the bells, bear witness to the rich heritage of the site. The building itself was listed as a historical monument in 1986, recognizing its historical and architectural value.

The administration of the church is the responsibility of the municipality of Lorcières, which ensures its maintenance and preservation. Its bell tower-wall, typical of the region, and painted interior elements make it an example of the rural religious heritage of Auvergnat. The available sources (Wikipedia, Monumentum, Merimée base) confirm its local importance and its remarkable state of conservation, despite the hazards of history.
