Origin and history
The church Saint-Sébastien de Conzieu, located in the Ain department in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region, is a religious building dating back to the 11th century. It was initially a clunish priory placed under the name of St Peter, before being dedicated to St Sebastian, a Roman martyr of the third century. This monument illustrates several architectural periods, with traces of construction or modification in the 11th century, first half of the 13th century, second quarter of the 16th century, and first half of the 19th century.
Ranked as historical monuments by order of 7 March 1908, the church benefited from a major restoration campaign in the early 2000s. A local association, Les Amis de l'Église Priorale de Conzieu, founded in 2000, played a key role in this project. The work, completed in 2013, has restored the building's brilliance, as evidenced by its inauguration after restoration. Today, the church remains a major architectural and historical testimony of the Clunisian heritage in the region.
The building, owned by the municipality of Conzieu, is the last visible vestige of the original priory. Its ranking among historical monuments underlines its heritage importance, both for its history and for its architecture, which combines Romanesque elements and later additions. The precise location of the church, at 1 Place de la Mairie, makes it a central point of the village, accessible to the public and anchored in local life.
