Origin and history
The church of Saint-Sébastien in Jatxou is a religious monument in the commune of the same name, in New Aquitaine. Although the available sources remain succinct, its existence is attested from the thirteenth century, with significant transformations or additions in the seventeenth century. These periods correspond to major phases of construction and renovation of cultural buildings in France, often linked to the evolution of architectural styles and liturgical needs.
In southwestern France, medieval churches such as Jatxou played a central role in community life. They served not only as a place of worship, but also as a gathering point for local decisions and religious holidays. In the 17th century, many churches were modified to adapt to the new liturgical norms of the Council of Trent, or to reflect the artistic renewal of the Baroque era.
