Origin and history

The Church of Saint-Servais, located in the commune of Saint-Servais in Finistère (British), is a Catholic religious building built in the second half of the seventeenth century. It is part of a parish enclosure, typical of Breton architecture, and was classified as a historical monument by order of 27 March 1914. Its Gothic bell tower, considered one of the most accomplished in the Léonard country, houses two galleries and two bell chambers, while its ossuary of 1643, in granite, has a Renaissance facade and a carved door. These elements, combined with a 17th century ordeal by Roland Doré, illustrate the artistic and historical richness of the site.

Inside, the church preserves ancient statues, including a Virgin with Child, as well as paintings by Yan-Dargent, a painter born in the parish in 1824. A mural of 1885, recently rediscovered in the ossuary, bears the inscription "Prayer and alms relieve the pain of souls". The pulpit of 1666, attributed to Y. Kervella, and a bell of 1785, blessed by the Rector William the Bras and sponsored by local nobles (family of Guiahard and Tinteniac), testify to the links between the building and the social history of the region.

Lebside, dated 1688, and the up-to-date bell tower, characteristic of Leon, are remarkable examples of Breton religious architecture. The site, owned by the municipality, remains a place of memory and heritage, open to the visit. Its enclosure, including calvary and ossuary, forms a coherent ensemble, reflecting the artistic and spiritual traditions of Brittany from the 17th and 18th centuries.
