Saint-Sigismont Church (Box B 405): Order of 15 May 1974
Origin and history
Saint-Sigismon Church of Saint-Simon, listed as a Historic Monument in 1974, dates from the second half of the 12th century. Its construction seems to have taken place in two distinct campaigns, as evidenced by the stylistic differences between the nave and the square of the transept. The plan of the building is rectangular, with a single vaulted nave in a broken cradle and a flat bedside. Traces of fortifications, such as the disappearance of cornices and a rectangular window in the bedside gable, suggest further defensive adaptation.
The square of the transept, covered with a cupola on pendants, is distinguished by its large broken arches with multiple rollers, resting on grouped columns. The capitals, adorned with palmettes and pearls, as well as the three-way consoles supporting the arches, illustrate a rare architectural know-how for the time. The façade, pierced by a three-pointed gate, preserves the remains of a porch that is now extinct, while a two-bayed bell tower overlooks the western arch.
Decorative elements, such as carved capitals and boudin arches, reflect the influence of late Romanesque art. The building, owned by the commune, is located in the Charente department, in New Aquitaine. Its ranking in 1974 underlines its heritage importance, although its precise location remains approximate according to available sources.
