Origin and history

Saint-Simon-et-Saint-Jude d'Ascou Church is a Catholic church located in the Ariège department in the Occitanie region. Built in 1448, it dominates the village of Ascou, perched on a rocky spur above the creek of Lauze. This strategic positioning reflects its historical and religious importance to the local community.

In 1862, the church underwent notable modernizations, including the façade and the bell tower, which now houses two bells. These architectural transformations bear witness to the stylistic evolutions and liturgical needs of the time. The building remains the main church of Ascou, playing a central role in the spiritual and social life of the village.

Historical sources, such as the Historical & Religious Studies on the country of the Upper Ariège Valley (1870) of Prosper Authier, briefly mention the church, emphasizing its anchoring in the local heritage. Its bell tower-wall, typical of Ariegean religious architecture, is listed in regional inventories, such as the List of bell tower-walls of Ariège.
