Origin and history
The church Saint-Sulpice de Banize, located in the Creuse department in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region, was built at the edge of the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries, with additions dated the fifteenth century. It has been a historic monument since 2007. This building, under the patronage of the Moutier Abbey of Ahun, probably replaces an older church. It consists of a unique nave with a straight bedside, with arches of warheads and capitals decorated with plant and floral motifs.
In 2018, the church was selected from the Creuse monuments for the heritage lottery. Work carried out in 2020 revealed medieval murals hidden under a badigeon, dating from about 1300 for the oldest and 1500 for the most recent. These discoveries attest to the artistic richness of the building, which also retains a broken western gate and a shingle-covered tower.
The interior of the church has abundant traces of decorations painted on the walls and probably the vault, dating from the late 15th or early 16th century. Doubles and veins fall back on banded columns, while polygonal capitals have overturned leaves, hooks and fleurs de lys. The building, owned by the municipality, is a major architectural and artistic testimony of the Limousin region.
