Clocher (Case D 326): entry by order of 30 April 1959

Origin and history

The Saint-Sulpice church of Saint-Sulpice, located in the Nièvre department in Burgundy-Franche-Comté, is a religious monument built in the 12th century. This place of worship, typical of the Romanesque architecture of the region, bears witness to the spiritual and community importance of rural churches at that time. Its bell tower, inscribed as a Historical Monument by order of 30 April 1959, constitutes the most notable protected element of the building.

In the Middle Ages, churches like Saint Sulpice served as a centre for the social and religious life of villages. They housed not only the offices, but also community gatherings, occasional markets and major events in local life. In Nièvre, a region with a rural economy and limited exchanges, these buildings played a central role in the structuring of territories and the transmission of knowledge.

The partial protection of the church, including its bell tower, reflects the recognition of its heritage value. Although the available sources do not detail any specific historical events related to this monument, its inscription in the title of Historical Monuments underscores its architectural and cultural importance. The location of the building, near the Grand Moulin, also suggests a historical link with local agricultural and artisanal activities, typical of medieval villages of Burgundy.
