Origin and history

The Saint-Sylvestre church of Centuri is a religious monument located in the municipality of Centuri, Corsica. Partly dating from the 16th century, it also underwent modifications or additions in the 19th century, as shown by the available data. This place of worship thus reflects several periods of construction and architectural evolution, typical of Cossian religious buildings that have often been redesigned over the centuries to meet the needs of local communities or structural constraints.

In the Corsican context of the 16th and 19th centuries, churches played a central role in village life. They served not only as a place of prayer, but also as a gathering point for community decisions and celebrations. In Centuri, as elsewhere in Corsica, religious architecture was closely integrated with local landscapes and traditions, often marked by simplicity of form and robustness adapted to the mountainous terrain.

These buildings were also symbols of cultural and spiritual resistance in a region where genoese influences, then French, followed each other.
