Saint-Sylvestre Church (Box B 82): Order of 28 September 1958

Origin and history

The Saint-Sylvestre church of West-Cappel, classified as a Historic Monument in 1958, is distinguished by its iconic architecture. Its sacristy is covered by an imperial roof, while its bell tower, surmounted by a polygonal arrow, dominates the local landscape. The windows of the building bear the dates of 1532, 1533 and 1534, suggesting a construction completed in the early 16th century, although its origin probably dates back to the late 15th century. These stylistic and epigraphic elements are a valuable testimony of Renaissance religious art in northern France.

The structure of the church underwent notable changes in the 19th century, during which the original wooden entrances were replaced by metal pulls. This intervention reflects the technical developments of the time, aimed at strengthening the structure while preserving the integrity of the building. The accuracy of its location, assessed as "very satisfactory", as well as its exact address (116 Rue du Contour de l'Eglise) attest to its anchoring in the local heritage.

West-Cappel, located in the Northern Department, was in medieval times and reborn an area marked by rural and artisanal life. Churches, like Saint-Sylvestre, played a central role in community life, serving as both a place of worship, a gathering and a symbol of prosperity for villages. Their construction often reflected the influence of local lords or trade corporations, although the sources do not specify the sponsors of this building.
