Origin and history

The church Saint-Thibaud de Fontenelle-en-Brie is a religious monument located in the south of the department of Aisne, in the Hauts-de-France region. This village, now a delegated commune of Dhuys and Morin-en-Brie, was historically a place of agriculture and breeding, typical of the briard plateau. The building, dated the 16th century, bears witness to the village's seniority, initially a simple branch of the parish of Artonges before becoming an independent parish.

Fontenelle-en-Brie, whose name evokes a "little fountain" in ancient French (fontanelle), is part of the natural region of the Brie, between the valleys of the Marne and the Seine. The village, close to the Marne before the territorial reorganization of 2016, was surrounded by municipalities such as Rozoy-Bellevalle or Montmirail. Its economy, centered on agriculture, reflects that of the Briard villages, where churches played a central role in community and spiritual life.

The creation of the new commune of Dhuys and Morin-en-Brie in 2016 incorporated Fontenelle-en-Brie as a delegated commune, marking a recent administrative development. Despite these changes, Saint Thibaud Church remains a symbol of local heritage, linked to the medieval and modern history of this part of the Aixoise Brie. No additional information is available on its architecture or any subsequent transformations.
