Origin and history
The Saint-Thomas-de-Cantorbéry church of Landerneau, classified as a Historic Monument, has its origins in the early 16th century for most of it. This place of worship illustrates the Breton religious architecture of the Renaissance, with characteristic elements of this period, such as vaults and openings.
The bell tower, an emblematic element of the building, was begun in 1607, marking an important phase of its construction. An inscription on the bell of the sacristy, dated 1669, attests to further work or additions, reflecting the continuous evolution of the building in the seventeenth century. These dates highlight the key periods of its construction and beautification.
The church was listed in the inventory of Historic Monuments by order of May 11, 1932, thus recognizing its heritage value. Today it belongs to the municipality of Landerneau and remains a symbol of local religious and architectural heritage. Its location in the city centre, Place Saint-Thomas, makes it a historical and cultural landmark for residents and visitors.
Available sources, including Monumentum, confirm its importance in the urban landscape of Landerneau. Although the details of sponsors or architects remain unknown, the church embodies the central role of religious buildings in Breton community life in the 16th and 17th centuries, at a time when faith and architecture were intimately linked.
