Origin and history
The Saint-Thomas-de-Cantorbéry church of Mur-de-Barrez is a religious building dating back to the 12th century, with major transformations in the 17th century. Its original Romanesque architecture was marked by a fire caused by the English, requiring the renovation of the vaults after 1436. The church was erected as a collegiate church in 1546 by Cardinal d'Armagnac, reflecting its growing importance in the region.
In the 16th century, the monument suffered significant damage during the Wars of Religion: in 1590, the Calvinists destroyed it, causing the destruction of the old bedside. The latter was replaced after 1635 by an apse with cut strips, preceded by an elongated choir. The vault of the latter, decorated with false caissons, and the apse, decorated with medallions representing the Evangelists and God the Father, bear witness to baroque additions. The bell tower was redone in 1758.
Classified as a two-stage historical monument (1932 for the church outside the choir, 1986 for the choir and its immediate environment), this church illustrates the architectural evolutions and historical tumults of the Rouergue. Its protection covers both Romanesque and post-medieval features, highlighting its composite heritage value. The property of the municipality now ensures its preservation, while keeping it in local life.
